This study examined how delaying mating by 0 to 14 days affects the longevity and reproductive output of the cigarette beetle, a serious pest of grain-based products, tobacco, and spices. Progeny production declined as adults aged before mating, and females were more adversely affected by delayed mating than males, while mating delay itself did not significantly change adult longevity. The findings inform the potential use of mating disruption as a pest management tactic to keep populations below damaging levels.
