Pollinators on Cowpea Vigna unguiculata: Implications for Intercropping to Enhance Biodiversity

Pollinators are on the decline and loss of flower resources plays a major role, raising concerns for insect-pollinated crop production and food security. This study evaluated twenty-four cowpea varieties for pollinator abundance and diversity using pan traps, sticky traps, and direct visual counts. Sticky traps captured the highest number of pollinators; the highest count occurred on Penny Rile and the lowest on Iron and Clay. Findings indicate that intercropping pollinator-dependent crops with varieties such as Penny Rile, Dixielee, and Whippoorwill can increase pollinator abundance and diversity while boosting crop yields.
